The challenge set for us by the artist He Xiangyu is to produce three large sculptures, approx.
2 x 2 metres in size, based on a 30 x 30 cm original Japanese egg carton.
As the artist requires an imitation of the ori ginal that is as detailed as possible, the original
is digitised using a high-precision 3D measuring system. The 3D data gained from this is used for the creation of the master
model, taking into consideration during casting the subsequent component weight, stability, wall thickness and flow rate.
The master model is created using a stereo lithography printing process. This then serves as the basis for the subsequent sand moulded casting. Finally, aluminium
is poured into the 3 objects - in the form of their pre-prepared sand moulds - and these are
then coated several times with gold leaf (23 carat), using traditional craftsmanship.
